Changing your saved password in Mozilla Thunderbird

One handy feature of Thunderbird is it will remember your password so you won't need to repeatedly type it in each time you access your emails. However, if you ever change your password you'll need to remove the old password from the Thunderbird settings; here's how to change your saved password in Thunderbird.

These instructions apply to Thunderbird 2.0.x
To change your saved password in Thunderbird 2.0.x on a Windows PC
- Select the Tools menu and choose Options
- The Options window will open. Click on the Privacy icon
- Click the Passwords tab
- Click the View Saved Passwords button
- The Password Manager window will appear. Select the appropriate email address
- Click the Remove button
- Select the outgoing server address (usually begins with smtp)
- Click the Remove button
- Click the Close button
- Click the OK button to close the Options window and then quit Thunderbird
- Launch Thunderbird again. You should then be prompted to type in your new password when you send or receive mail. Select Use Password Manager to remember this password to save this new password
To change your saved password in Thunderbird 2.0.x on an OS X Mac
- Select the Thunderbird menu and choose Preferences
- The preferences window will open. Click on the Privacy icon
- Click the Passwords tab
- Click the View Saved Passwords button
- The Password Manager window will appear. Select the appropriate email address
- Click the Remove button
- Select the outgoing server address (usually begins with smtp)
- Click the Remove button
- Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the Password Manager window
- Click the red button in the upper left corner to close the preferences window and quit Thunderbird
- Launch Thunderbird again. You should then be prompted to type in your new password when you send or receive mail. Select Use Password Manager to remember this password to save this new password
